Non-Toxic Floor and Carpet Cleaners Few areas of the home get dirty faster than the floor. If you have young children or pets, it's important to clean carpets and floors with the least toxic method available. Many commercial carpet cleaners contain petroleum distillates which can be harmful to inhale. Try the following techniques for a safer way to clean your carpet: - Blot spills with a clean rag immediately.
- For carpet odors, sprinkle with baking soda. After 15 minutes, vacuum.
- For normal cleaning, mix 2 cups white vinegar with 1- 1-1/2 gal. hot water. May be applied to rug with wet rag, taking care not to saturate. Dry thoroughly and ventilate room. May also be used in carpet shampooing machine.
- For grease stains, cover with baking soda. When all the grease has been absorbed, vacuum.
When stains are too tough, or too old to remove with these methods, try citrus based cleaners. Even though citrus cleaners are far less toxic than standard carpet cleaners, they are just as effective. They are also quite strong and need to be handled with care.
